Biogest expands into the Greek biogas market

  • Biogest-Elakmon cooperation agreement signed
  • Huge market potential for biogas from agro-industrial residues in Greece

Athens/ Vienna: Biogest has signed a cooperation agreement with the Greek company Elakmon for further expansion of the company in a market with an attractive framework and a large availability of agro-industrial residues. Followed by projects in the United Kingdom, France, India, South Korea, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary and Austria, Greece has a huge market potential for biogas.

Currently the major part of the electricity produced in Greece comes from the use of coal while renewable energies still play a minority role. Following the renewable energy targets established for 2020 by the EU members, Greece developed an ambitious energy strategy including attractive conditions for the development of biogas plants and has a big raw material potential. Biogest has achieved experience with similar residues coming from the Mediterranean agro-industry in the Italian biogas market such as olive pomace, where projects are under development and construction.

Biogest offers its PowerRing technology to customers in the Greek market. The PowerRing system and its outstanding mixing technology has proven its worth during long-term operation and its possibility to operate with many different feedstocks like animal manures, straw and agro-industrial residues. The PowerRing technology draws on an extremely low proportion of the power it generates, because of the mixing technique, feeding system and overall design.

Biogest is an internationally active biogas plant manufacturer and operator with its headquarters in Austria and subsidiaries in the UK, France, US, Italy, Romania, Serbia and the Czech Republic. More than 150 biogas plant projects generating electricity or biomethane have been completed to date. Our reference plants are located in several European countries and the global market is served by licenced partners.

Elakmon is a Greek company with a presence in the sector of renewable energy and disposes over 50 years’ experience of its executives and a very good knowledge of the Greek RES market. It has broaden its activities in the sector of waste to energy focusing on the energy production through anaerobic digestion units.

As a renewable source of energy, biogas offers technological, ecological and economic advantages: energy can be generated 365 days a year, at all times of the day and night, and therefore biogas plays an important role in the mix of renewable energy from water, sun and wind. In addition to helping achieve climate protection goals, biogas also helps reduce reliance on energy imports. Decentralised energy generation also guarantees sustainable local development.
